The best shape dining table is what will work best in the space you have available. A round dining table is perfect for use in corners or smaller rooms as you can place your dining chairs wherever you like around the table itself. Round kitchen tables also help to create the illusion of more space, as a round table looks smaller than a square table.

Square dining tables are still great for small spaces but are better suited for dining rooms or kitchens that are square to complement their shape, whereas a rectangle dining table is the perfect choice for larger groups of people and works best in a large but narrow room! Remember that both square dining tables and rectangle dining tables require a specific amount of space to accommodate the legs and accompanying chairs.

Extendable dining tables work by utilising a mechanism that will allow you to extend the table surface. Folding dining tables, such as a drop-leaf dining table has either a hinge or leaves on either side of a fixed section in the centre which can be lifted and locked into position to offer more space. A butterfly leaf table has a mechanism that allows you to pull either end of the tabletop, revealing a space in the centre.

Depending on the type of butterfly leaf table you have, there might be a section here that will lift out in a 'butterfly' shape and can be pressed flat. Alternatively, some tables will have a section of board that will slot into place on top!

Measuring your dining room or kitchen is an easy task that just requires a tape measure! We'd recommend measuring from corner to corner along the wall, though you can also measure corner to corner diagonally. By working this out, you'll determine the width and length of your dining room or kitchen, so you know exactly how much space you have when ordering furniture.
