A versatile home office desk

Desks are a perfect choice for home offices, as they offer you a place to work comfortably for long periods. These office desks are sleek and come in various styles, sizes and colours to suit any room whilst offering you plenty of space for your laptop or computer screens. Some home office desks also include storage such as drawers or shelves, allowing you to keep your items close to hand whenever you need them! Combine your new desk with a comfortable office chair, and you'll work just as efficiently as in the office!

Computer desks for working, gaming and studying

A desk isn't just useful for working, though, as they offer space for various purposes. Choose a computer desk with plenty of room to accommodate your screens and use it to play your favourite games on your laptop or computer. Alternatively, you could add a study desk to your child's bedroom. We have a wide range of desks here on Make It Homely, and giving your child their own space to work on homework or studying will be invaluable during their learning years!

What is the perfect desk size?

The ideal desk size is a computer desk that will fit into your available space. Use our helpful measuring guide to find out the size of your home office, if you have one, so you can make sure you choose an office desk that will comfortably fit. Make sure also to consider that you'll need to be able to use the desk without feeling too cramped!

Secondly, you'll need to choose a desk size that will accommodate everything you need to work or study. Choose a computer desk that will offer enough space on the tabletop to hold everything you need, whether that's a laptop, a computer screen, a textbook, etc. A small desk might suit a smaller space, but it might not meet your needs, whereas a more oversized desk could end up wasting space.

Should my desk face a window?

We wouldn't recommend your home office desk to face a window, purely for practical reasons! Whilst it might give you good lighting, it could make it harder to work as the light might be brighter than your computer screen, leading to eye strain and fatigue.

Another possible problem is that it could also be very distracting! A window will allow you to see the world as it passes by, whether that's the street or the sky. As lovely as this might be, it could cause productivity problems if you accidentally spend more time watching the window than doing your work!

A good solution is to place your desk at a right angle to a window if possible. This will help reduce any window glare whilst still allowing you plenty of natural light!

Should your desk be in your bedroom?

There's no particular reason you shouldn't have your desk in your bedroom! In an ideal world, we'd all have a lovely home office we could retreat into if we work from home or when we're studying, but this isn't possible for homes running short on space.

As such, it's perfectly fine to put a desk in your bedroom if you can't place it anywhere else. Just make sure to optimise that part of your bedroom for work or studying, whilst ensuring the rest of your bedroom is for relaxing.

What should I look for when buying a desk?

When buying a home office desk, you should make sure that it will meet all your necessary requirements so that you're making a good choice economically. As mentioned above, carefully measure up your space to take full advantage of your available space, and choose a desk that will meet your personal needs.

If you need two screens to work efficiently, you'll want a desk with enough space to accommodate those screens alongside your accessories. Alternatively, if you want a study desk that will make schoolwork a breeze, then you might want to look at desks with storage options, including drawers and shelves. This will provide you with space to store away essentials such as stationery, documents and much more, so they're always close to hand.
