Here at Make It Homely, we have a wide range of storage furniture available that will suit every purpose, from putting your shoes away neatly to displaying your favourite trinkets. We'll talk about them in our storage furniture guide!
What are the different types of storage furniture?
There's types of storage furniture to suit every need and every room, from TV units to console tables to coat racks! Whether you're looking for living room storage furniture or want something to add to a hallway or dining room, a wide range of storage options are available.
What is a TV unit?
A TV unit is a piece of storage furniture designed to hold a TV. It's a common piece of living room storage furniture, with many TV units designed to accommodate everything from smaller TVs to the largest of flat screens! They're found in almost every home, and we have various colour and style options available here on Make It Homely.
It is important that you consider whether the TV unit you want to purchase is capable of accommodating your TV size. If you buy a small TV unit, but your TV is 75", you might find that it will struggle to hold and pose a safety hazard!
Can I store a games console in a TV unit?
Yes, most TV units come with extra built-in storage, such as shelving or cupboards that will allow you to store a games console or TV box. This means you can save on space without buying extra furniture. Another benefit is that there is often plenty of room to store away remotes, DVDs, Blu-Rays, video games and much more to keep a tidy room!
What is the purpose of a sideboard?
A sideboard, also called a buffet or a credenza, is traditionally used in dining rooms to store cutlery, dishes and more. Nowadays, you don't have to use it exclusively in the dining room but wherever you need a little extra storage!
Alongside offering plenty of drawers to store away your dining supplies, you can display photographs or ornaments on the long flat surface, or even hold extra food if you're having a party or hosting a dinner. Usually, a sideboard is placed against the wall as it is designed to be unobtrusive yet give you plenty of functionality!
What's the difference between a bookshelf and a bookcase?
A bookshelf is a freestanding unit or shelf capable of holding books, whereas a bookcase is enclosed on the sides. You can mount many bookshelves to a wall that consist of only one shelf, or there may be a ladder-style bookshelf that looks similar to a bookcase. The difference between them is that, with a bookcase, there is no chance of your books falling off the edge because the sides are enclosed, whereas you will need a bookstand to keep your books upright with a bookshelf.
Another difference is that bookcases generally can't be mounted to walls and are often narrower, heavier and larger pieces of furniture. However, bookshelves can often be found in much longer and larger sizes due to their versatile nature.
What are display cabinets used for?
As their name suggests, display cabinets are used to display important items in your home. They can be used as living room storage furniture or even in a dining room to showcase treasured ornaments or photographs that you want to proudly display for family and friends!
Can I use storage furniture in any room?
Yes, there is no rule that says you must use a piece of storage furniture in a specific room. Although something like a TV unit may traditionally be used as a living room storage furniture, you could opt to place it in a guest room, a bedroom or even a dining room if that takes your fancy!
Storage furniture is simply a piece capable of storing items, so what you do with it and where you place it is entirely up to you.
