Is there a standard sofa size?
No, due to the nature of them, there is no standard size of sofa. We offer a variety of styles, including 2-seater sofas, 3-seater sofas, and L-shaped sofas, so depending on the chosen item, each will have different sofa measurements. Make It Homely also have a wide range of sofa beds available which can vary in size, so take a look at our Sofa Bed Buying Guide and we can help!
What size sofa is best?
The right sofa size is entirely dependent on personal preference and how much room you have available. When looking at sofas, it is important to consider your room's proportions and the sofa's purpose, as you want to avoid the size of your furniture being overbearing. A small sofa may be better suited to a flat or studio, whereas an L-shaped sofa may work better for a cinema room.
What size sofa will fit into my home?
Your home must be measured prior to purchase, as you need to ensure that the sofa will fit through both the chosen entryway and also into its intended space.
Measure doorways, hallways, stairways, and any other parts of your home that your sofa will need to be manoeuvred around - and don’t forget to take into account tight corners!
When measuring the intended space that you want the sofa to be in, remember to consider the full sofa dimensions. So does the sofa recline or is it L-shaped? Compare all the measurements that you've made of your room to the dimensions of your chosen sofa to help you determine which fit is best, whether that be a 2-seater sofa or 3-seater sofa.
Make It Homely also recommends leaving a slight wiggle room if the sofa is to be placed near a wall or other items of furniture, to help prevent the sofa rubbing up against another surface.
How do I measure sofa size?
Sofa measurements are determined by height, depth, and length. Start by measuring the height from the feet of the sofa to the top of the cushions. Next, measure depth from the front to the back of the sofa. And finally, measure the back of the sofa from left to right.
Make It Homely’s product pages include full sofa measurements for each product, making it easy for you to understand whether the item will fit into its intended space. Each sofa will differ depending on size, with 2-seater sofas being smaller than 3-seater sofas, for example. Compare this to the measurements of your home to understand which sofa will fit into your home.
How do I measure a corner sofa?
A corner sofa requires you to measure both lengths of the shape and also taking into into account the depth of the front of the sofa. For accuracy, measure the back of one side of the sofa to determine the first length, then the back of the other side to figure out the second.
Also, remember to account for any footstools or other accessories that may impact the overall sofa measurements!
How do I get a sofa through a doorway?
Familiarise yourself with the sofa’s dimensions so you know how much space you need before measuring the chosen entryway. Check to see if the item will arrive in multiple boxes or if it will be delivered fully assembled, as this will impact how much space you need and also how easy it is to move around the home.
The material of the piece may impact how an item can be dismantled and how it is therefore delivered - for example, a leather sofa may arrive in different packaging to a velvet sofa to help protect the upholstery. Size is also a defining factor, as a small sofa will be easier to deliver than a corner sofa and it may not need any assembling.
This should help you determine whether the item will fit through the doorway. Make sure to consider if turning the sofa onto its side or even diagonally will help it to fit through doorways, as the size might be too big at a normal angle but will fit through smoothly when turned!
How can I find out if a sofa will fit upstairs?
If the sofa needs to be delivered to a room upstairs or if you live in a flat, ensure that this can be easily accessed. Measure the height and width of any stairways and the depth of any corners you may need to manoeuvre around. If a lift is required, check the weight restrictions prior to purchase and measure up the space available in the lift so you know that your sofa will fit.
