Dining Furniture Measuring Guide

Need to measure up for a new dining table? Not sure where to start? Look no further - our handy Make It Homely guide is perfect for those needing to revamp their dining space. From dining room chairs to square dining tables, we can help you build the dining room of your dreams with ease.

How is the dining area measured?

Whether you’re looking to add a new table, dining room chairs, or you’re simply starting fresh - you will need to measure your dining space accurately. Remember to measure the walls, other furniture that's in the room, and any tricky nooks and crannies - for example, alcoves - using a reliable tape measure.

When measuring dining space, it is important to determine whether people will have enough space once they sit at the dining table. The dining table shape will influence how much space is available, with a round dining table offering space that is easier to access than a rectangle dining table and so forth.

You also need to account for any drawers or doors that may need to be opened, as well as the entryway itself. Ensure you leave enough room for these things to prevent an unpleasant and cramped interior!

Make It Homely recommends mapping out the size and shape of your new furniture using masking tape or newspaper. This will help you better understand how it may look once in the chosen room, and also let you establish what size dining table will work best in the space you have available.

How do you measure the size of a dining room table?

First, you need to decide how many people will be sitting at the table, and therefore, how much space each person requires. Would a small dining table be best? What about the size you're considering? A square dining table will take up a different amount of space compared to a rectangle dining table, and so forth. If the sole purpose of the table is for meal times, how much elbow room does each individual need to eat comfortably? We recommend leaving around 30 inches for each person.

Next, account for space around the table. Is there room for people to push their chairs out and stand up easily? Will people be able to walk around a rectangle dining table comfortably? What about an oval dining table? Are there any drawers that may need to be opened? If so, how much room is necessary to prevent blocking these?

We recommend leaving at least three feet of space between your dining table and any walls, walkways, or other furniture to avoid bumping into anything. This is especially important if you want to host dinners, as you'll need plenty of space to be able to bring hot food back without running the risk of dropping anything.

How do you measure dining chairs?

For dining chairs, you will need to accurately measure the height, width, and depth of each, as well as ensuring enough room is left for your guests to sit comfortably. Here at Make It Homely, we offer something for everyone - from dining benches to bar stools - so make sure you choose the best fit.

Measure from the floor to the seat, and then ensure that there are approximately 10 inches of space between this point and the underside of the table. This will ensure guests are able to sit at a comfortable height.

You may also need to measure the seat's depth from the front of the chair to the backrest. And then the height, from the tallest point of the backrest to the floor. This will allow you to better understand how the dining table chairs will complement your decor and whether they will provide your guests with the best dining experience.

Can you put storage in the dining room?

Yes, we offer plenty of storage options that would look great in your dining room! Whether you want to add a decorative bookcase, stunning display cabinet, or discreet sideboard, there are various storage options that can enhance your dining space on Make It Homely.
