A recliner for everyone

Is your sofa just not making the cut anymore? And an armchair isn’t really your thing? Well, how about a recliner? And if you’re looking for the ultimate comfort option, you can’t really go wrong. With various fabrics and colourways to choose from, we have something to complement every personal style.

Recline the right way

Whether a swivel recliner feels more like you or a rise and recline chair is a more convenient option, Make It Homely have got you covered. Choose from leather recliners, velvet, or even fabric to suit your style preferences, and find the ultimate cosy addition! With so many options to pick from, there's guaranteed to be a recliner to suit your home.

What is a recliner?

A recliner is an armchair, or sofa, that offers a reclining back, and usually also includes an integral footrest. They're great to relax in after a long day and can be particularly ideal for those who want to curl up in a chair but stretch out without having to lay out on a sofa!

What types of recliners are available?

We offer several types of recliners at Make It Homely. Swivel recliner chairs combine the normal functions of a reclining chair with a swivel base to improve usability and comfort. Rise and recline chairs help accessibility by improving how people recline, sit down and stand up. They usually include a seat base that rises or tilts to help you out of the chair.

What is the difference between a recliner and an armchair?

Simply put, reclining chairs are movable armchairs. Recliners share a similar frame but can be tilted back and also offer an extendable footrest. Many recliners will look exactly the same as an armchair, and their reclining features will be hidden, whereas others will look more obviously like a 'recliner' chair.

Are electric or manual recliners better?

Both electric and manual recliners offer different benefits, so it is important to find out which is best for you. Electric recliners guarantee easy use and are ideal for those looking to relax. They may also be beneficial for those with limited mobility, due to them being so easy to use.

Manual recliners, on the other hand, are much easier to transport around your home as they do not require a power source. Which mechanism works best for you depends completely on your personal preference.

How should I measure for a recliner?

When measuring for a recliner, it is important to take into account the maximum measurements. First, measure the width of the recliner, and then the length of the chair when it is fully reclined. Compare this to the measurements of the intended space and allow for slight wiggle room.

If the chair is to be placed near a wall, allow for at least five to ten inches of space between the wall and the head of the recliner at full extension. If there is anything to be placed in front of the item, again ensure there is a minimum of five to ten inches between the two.

How do I care for my recliner?

Reclining chairs should be cared for in a similar way to armchairs. Vacuum the fabric regularly and, depending on material, apply the appropriate treatment, such as an anti-bacterial spray. Do not use water on leather reclining chairs, as this will result in marks. Treat any spills immediately to prevent stains or discolouring. Leave the chair to dry naturally to avoid any watermarks or overheating.

Make It Homely also recommend keeping the chair out of direct sunlight and, if needed, using an exhaust fan to expel cooking fumes in the kitchen. These fumes and cigarette smoke can settle on the fabric, leaving an unpleasant smell and stains. You may also need to oil the mechanics of the chair after a certain amount of time, as this will help to prolong the life of your recliner.

Does a recliner have to go in the living room?

No, a recliner can fit into many rooms. Many people choose to have a reclining chair in the living room, however, it could also be placed in the bedroom, in a conservatory, or in a smaller space to create a cosy reading den.
